Undead Werewolves / Ghasts

Hello everyone. A small novelty today that will change from a world I know well. A little adventure towards a less familiar world, where shapes, colors, packaging are similar but not the same. I love Coca and I tasted Pepsi ... Well I have to tell you that I liked Pepsi .

I was trying to boost my vampire counts army with shock troops, preferably monstrous infantry that would complete my cannon fodder and cavalry. So I opted for Vargheists (renamed Ghasts in the ninth age). However, even if the GW Vargheists figurines are pretty cool, I wanted to change and try something else. By doing a little research on the web, I stumbled upon a werewolf unit from GW's main competitor, Mantic, who markets the miniatures for their Kings of War game. And I was not disappointed. Not only do the miniatures cost much less than those of GW, but in addition they come well-packaged in a box that resembles a VHS box. The figurines are molded in a hard enough resin which makes them solid and easy to work on. They require a little more work, including a bit of green stuff to fill in two or three holes, but the overall quality is very good.

Vampire Counts Necromancer

Hi everybody, small break from Warhammer 40000. I present to you today a very singular miniature because it is really vintage and uncovered completely by chance. In my bitz box, I had a small metal figure that I thought was a mercenary wizard or something else, completely forgotten for years and missing the left arm. After some research on the Internet to determine where this little guy came from, I realized that I had in my hands a necromancer for Mordheim, which explained why I could not identify it from the Warhammer catalogue... Let me just say this is the perfect fit for my last fantasy army in date. The only challenge was finding an arm to our friend. It was done with my inexhaustible empire bitz reserve: a militia arm of the empire would do.

The paint job was rather quick and easy: base coat and highlights with the airbrush, followed by a quick but effective painting in only one evening. Cherry on the cake: a "black magic" effect on the eyes. I wanted to give the impression of a look full of magic to contrast with the human aspect in the middle of an army of undead. To achieve this, I first basecoated the eyes in white, followed by a very thin and well diluted layer of Moot Green. I then performed a "glaze" which consists of several very diluted layers around the eyes. And here is the final work:

Hexwraiths

Hi all, the interruption has been a bit long because of intensive work. So photos and projects pile up, but I have not had much time to publish. Today we return to our first love, namely Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Since I arrived in London, with no friends to play with, I enrolled at the London Warhammer Gaming Guild to test my new Vampire Counts. Well I have had time to play only four games, which is not bad you might say. Very relaxed atmosphere, we meet lots of nice people and more, we play the Ninth Age: let's say complete secession from the damn Age of Sigmar! And as it turns out, it allowed me to test my pretty Vampire Counts, and; cherry on the cake, with good results. And I remembered that I did not post pictures of my Hexwraiths, the last painted unit of Vampire Counts...

Roi Liche / Lich King

Pour ceux qui attendaient ce moment avec impatience, voici la dernière photo de la dernière figurine peinte pour atteindre 2000 points de comtes vampire : le roi liche. En fait, cette figurine ne faisait pas partie de mes plans initiaux, mais en attendant 20 minutes devant la gare Saint-Lazare pour partir en week-end, j'ai quand même été obligé de passer au GW pour faire un tour. Et là, petite figurine à 11,5€ d'un énorme squelette en armure trop stylé, j'ai été obligé de l'acheter. Comme cela faisait assez longtemps que je n'avais pas acheté une figurine neuve, j'ai eu l'occasion de monter chaque morceau sur une tige de métal afin de peindre à l'aérographe convenablement. J'ai été assez feignant puisque je n'ai même pas daigné peindre les gemmes, mais bon, il fera un bon champion squelette :

For those who have be awaiting this moment, this is the last picture of the last painted figure that allowed me to build my 2,000 points Vampire Counts: the Lich King. In fact, this figurine was not part of my initial plans, but I had to wait 20 minutes in front of Saint-Lazare station as I was going away for the weekend and I really had to have a look inside the GW. And there, a figurine at only 11.5 €: a very stylish huge skeleton in armor, so I was forced to buy it. As I have spent long time without buying a brand new figure, I had the opportunity to glue each piece on a metal rod in order to properly airbrush it. I was quite lazy since I did not even bother to paint the gems, but hey, this model will make a good skeleton champion :

Régiment de goules terminé / Crypt ghouls unit painted

Et voilà, les 30 goules sont terminées, magnétisées et soclées. J'ai eu besoin d'un peu de motivation pour m'y mettre mais le tout a été globalement rapide. Avec Vlad et le Roi Liche que j'ai peints il y a trois jours, j'ai entièrement terminé mon armée de 2000 points de Comtes Vampires. Le bilan est plutôt positif car le temps pour monter et peindre une telle armée a été très bas avec la lasure et l'aérographe et le rendu franchement bien pour du tabletop. Maintenant, je m'attaque à ce qu'il me reste de 40k à savoir les Salamanders et les Catachan, mon armée de Nécron étant quasiment finie!

And now, the 30 ghouls are all painted, magnetized with their bases done. I needed a little motivation to get the job done but it went fast enough. Along with Vlad and the Lich King I finished three days ago, I completely finished my Vampire Counts 2000 points army. The result is quite positive because the time I spent assembling and painting such an army was very low thanks to dipping and the airbrush and frankly looks pretty great for tabletop miniatures. Now, it's time to start working on what I have left of Warhammer 40k namely Salamanders and Catachan as I also painted my Necron army entirely!

Vlad von Carstein - Seigneur Vampire / Vampire Lord

Ce week-end, j'ai été efficace puisque j'ai pu terminer à la fois mon armée de 2000 points de comtes vampires et 2000 points de nécrons. Alors préparez-vous pour l'avant dernière photo de comtes vampires avec celle de Vlad von Carstein qui fera office de seigneur vampire. Seulement trois petites soirées pour le peindre. Il n'est pas fantastique mais fera le taf pour commander ma horde de mort-vivants. J'ai préféré opter pour une armure entièrement dorée plutôt que noire car je trouve que la gamme "Vallejo Liquid Gold" fait réellement des merveilles. Pour la peau, je suis parti d'une couche d'os blanchi sur laquelle j'ai passé un lavis de Seraphim Sepia pour donner l'impression d'une peau flêtrie. Le reste est assez classique.

This weekend, I was effective since I was able to complete both my 2 000 points vampire counts army and 2000 points worth of necrons. So get ready for the penultimate vampire counts picture with that of Vlad von Carstein who will be used as a vampire lord. Only three evenings to paint him. He doesn't look fantastic but will do the job to control my undead horde. I opted for a fully golden armor rather than a black one because I feel the "Vallejo Liquid Gold" range really does wonders. For the skin, I started with a layer of bleached bone on which I applied a wash of Seraphim Sepia to give the impression of withered skin. The rest is fairly standard.

La lasure et les goules / Dipping crypt ghouls

Dernière ligne droite : j'attaque les goules à la lasure. Un régiment de 30 pour compléter mon armée de comtes vampires. D'ailleurs à ce propos, j'ai créé ma liste d'armée pour juillet, ce qui veut dire qu'il me reste peu de temps pour terminer de peindre l'intégralité. Mais bon ce week-end ça devrait aller pour au moins finir les goules. Pour mon seigneur vampire, on verra si j'ai du temps...

Last lap: I am dipping my crypt ghouls. A unit of 30, to complete my Vampire Counts army. It makes me think that I build an army list for July, which means I have little time to complete the entire army. But then, this weekend should be enough to at least finish the ghouls. For my vampire lord, we'll see if I have time ...

Je vous présente une avancée de plus sur la pièce maîtresse d'une armée de comtes vampires, celui qui a la capacité de réveiller les morts, de les faire combattre et mourir une deuxième fois, de celui qui a trempé dans des magouilles pas sigmarites, qui parcourt le vieux monde dans une quête morbide : le nécromancien.

Let me introduce a further step on the centerpiece of a Vampire Counts army, the one that has the ability to wake the dead, to make them fight and die a second time, one who was involved in the all the possible shenanigans, who travels the old world in a morbid quest: the necromancer.

Il n'a pas relevé un défi immense, mais le choix des couleurs a été relativement difficile. J'avais commencé par une sous-couche marron pour faire un dégradé de brun, mais mon premier essai ne rendait pas super bien. J'ai donc opté pour une robe façon Jeanne Mas : en rouge et noir! Le tout avec des teintes de marron quand même. Le seul truc dont je ne suis pas très satisfait reste le visage qui fait peut-être trop humain à mon goût mais bon après pourquoi un nécromancien versant dans l'occultisme aurait-il nécessairement une peau grise...

Whereas painting him wasn't a huge challenge, the choice of colors has been relatively difficult. I started with a brown undercoat in order to do brown undertones, but my first attempt did not look so great. So I opted for a red and black cape with shades of brown. The only thing  I am not very satisfied with is the face that perhaps is too human for my taste but hey, why would a necromancer who deals in the occult have necessarily gray skin ...

Chevaliers squelettes des comtes vampires / Vampire Counts black knights

Le miracle de la lasure continue même si j'ai cette fois subi une petite mésaventure avec mes chevaliers squelettes. Après avoir fait ma traditionnelle fixation avec du fil de fer, je m'attelle à l'application des couleurs de base. Sur les destriers : du rouge passé à l'aéro et du bleached bone pour les os. Pour les cavaliers, une couche de base de boltgun métal à l'aero et les détail en noir, doré, et rouge. Content de mon travail, je place donc le premier cavalier sur ma perceuse et hop je trempe dans la lasure. Et là, c'est le drame. ça part dans tous les sens, le truc explose dans ma cuisine (heureusement que c'était pas dans le salon...) et j'affiche, j'imagine, un air tout penaud. Je rattrape ma bêtise en essuyant au sopalin, je laisse sécher et je remonte la figurine : plus de peur que de mal. Du coup, pour plus de prudence, je me suis contenté de "lasurer" avec de l'Agrax Earthshade, pour un rendu similaire à ce que j'attendais. Un coup de vernis et de soclage plus tard, et le tout n'est finalement pas si mal :

The miracle of dipping goes on, even if this time I had a little mishap with my skeleton knights. After attaching them with wire as I usually do, I applied the base colors. On the horses : red with the airbrush and bleached bone for the bone parts. On the riders, a layer of Boltgun Metal with the airbrush and the details in black, gold and red. Happy with my paint job, I put the first horseman attached to the wire on the drill and dip it. And there come the tragedy. The model explodes in my kitchen (fortunately it didn't happen in the living room ...) and I guess I must have looked shamefaced. I corrected my mistake by wiping the mini with paper towel, let it dry and build it again, limiting the damage. Just to be on the safe side, I finally dipped the knight in Agrax Earthshade for a similar result. After applying a layer of varnish and basing, the final rendering is actually not that bad:

Allez, plus que 29 goules et un seigneur vampire et je serai prêt pour le (deuxième) retour du Brésil de notre pote FX!

Come on, only 29 ghouls and a vampire lord left and I'll be ready for our buddy FX's (second) return from Brazil!

Une Banshee pour l'armée de CV / A banshee for my VC army

Et on continue sur les comtes vampires cette fois avec un personnage spécial peint à l'aérographe : une banshee. J'ai utilisé exactement la même technique que pour les nuées, rien de très compliqué et méthode très rapide pour obtenir un rendu correct. J'ai peint le socle avec des bords marron car je trouvais que le vert avec le socle gris rendait moyen sur la figurine en entier, à voir si je change après.

J'ai eu un peu de mal pour lester le socle car la figurine est très déséquilibrée : j'ai donc placé un aimant en dessous car je me demande si en jouant, il ne vaut pas mieux l'intégrer carrément à un régiment de 40 histoire de la protéger. Il ne me reste plus que Vlad, un nécromancier, 4 chevaliers squelettes et 29 goules à lasurer et j'aurai tout fini!

And let's continue with the vampire counts with this time a special character painted with my airbrush: a banshee. I used exactly the same technique as for the spirit hosts: nothing very complicated and a very fast method to obtain proper results. I painted the base with brown edges because I felt the green and gray base didn't look so great, maybe I'll change it afterwards.
I had a little trouble giving weight to the base because the model is very unbalanced so I placed a magnet underneath because I wonder if during a battle I should place it into my 40 squeletons unit. I only have Vlad, a Necromancer, 4 black knights left to paint and 29 ghouls to dip and everything will be done!

Nuées d'esprits : la menace fantôme / Spirit hosts : the phantom menace

Les forces de la mort grossissent à vue d'oeil. Un peu comme les loups funestes, je ne suis pas fan des nouvelles figurines de nuées même si elles me font penser aux vents dans les Chroniques de la Lune Noire :

The forces of death are growing more and more. A bit like for the dire wolves, I'm not a fan of the new spirit hosts even if they make me think of the winds in the Chronicles of the Black Moon:

 

On va encore dire que je vis dans le passé, mais les anciennes figurines ont ce côté vintage qui me plait tant. C'est aussi la possibilité de mixer nouvelles et anciennes figurines qui rend une armée belle à mon sens. Sans tomber dans ce type de spectre :

People will say again that I live in the past, but the old figurines had this vintage look that I like so much. It is also the ability to mix old and new models that makes this army look cool in my opinion. Without falling into that kind of ghost:

Voilà ce qui me botte plus et pourquoi j'ai parcouru Ebay hier soir afin d'acquérir deux nouvelles nuées après en avoir peint deux :

That's what suits me most and why I went on Ebay last night to buy two new spirit hosts after I painted these two :

La technique de peinture est assez simple et relativement rapide, si tant est qu'on possède un aérographe :

- tout d'abord, une souche couche de gris

- éclaircissement de la souche couche à 45° par le haut en blanc, afin de réaliser un pré-ombrage sympatique

- vient ensuite une couche de vert clair (gamme Prince August Air) sur l'ensemble

- éclaircissement en vert pâle (gamme Prince August Air) sur les parties saillantes

- éclaircissement plus léger avec un mélange 50/50 de vert pâle et de blanc sur les partie VRAIMENT saillantes

- lavis de Biel-Tan Green sur l'ensemble de la figurine

- soclage à votre guise

- vernis mat pour atténuer l'effet brillant du lavis

Temps total : une grosse demi-heure avec un bon rythme, soclage compris

The painting technique is fairly simple and relatively quick, if ... you have an airbrush:

- First: grey undercoat 

- Highlight the undercoat at 45° from the top with white paint, to achieve a nice pre-shading

- Then comes a layer of light green (Prince August Air)

- Pale green highlight (Prince August Air) on the more visible parts

- Lighter highlight with a 50/50 mix of pale green and white the REALLY visible parts

- Wash of Biel-Tan Green on the whole mini

- Basing as you wish

- Matt varnish to mitigate the shiny look of the wash

Total time: 30 minutes at a good pace, including basing
